The Beach Boys are an American rock band, formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California. The group was initially composed of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Managed by the Wilsons' father Murry, The Beach Boys signed to Capitol Records in 1962. The band's early music gained popularity across the United States for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a Southern California youth culture of surfing, cars, and romance. Surfer Girl is the third studio album by The Beach Boys and their second longplayer in 1963. This was the first album by The Beach Boys for which Brian Wilson was given full production credit, a position Wilson would maintain until the end of the Smile sessions in 1967. Surfer Girl is also a 1973 repackaging of early 1960s The Beach Boys tracks by US budget label Pickwick Records. Surfer Girl hit #7 in the US during a chart stay of 56 weeks. In the UK, the album was re-released in spring 1967 and reached #13.

The Ivy League were an English trio, created in 1964, who enjoyed two Top 10 hit singles in the UK Singles Chart in 1965. The group's sound was characterised by rich, three-part vocal harmonies. The Ivy League was formed by three session singers with an extensive vocal range, John Carter, Ken Lewis (both previous members of Carter-Lewis and the Southerners) plus Perry Ford. They were first heard doing background vocals for The Who on their hit single "I Can't Explain" in November 1964 but after that the Who's producers entrusted John Entwistle and Pete Townshend with the backing vocals. Their debut single, "What More Do You Want" generated little interest but the second release, "Funny How Love Can Be" made the UK chart's Top 10. Further hits followed, including "That's Why I'm Crying" and UK chart #3 "Tossing and Turning". The original trio released just one album, 1965's This is the Ivy League – panned in the music press as disappointing, with its excessively wide spread of musical styles and material before both Carter and Lewis left the group. Carter departed in January 1966, with Lewis leaving about one year later. The duo then set up a production company called Sunny Records.

The Lords founded in 1959, were the most long-living and successful beat band of West Germany. The band's main headquarter was Düsseldorf/North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1965, the classic line-up of The Lords consisted of Ulli Günther (vocals), Bernd Zamulo (bass), Leo Lietz (guitar), Rainer Petry (guitar) and Max Donath (drums). This classic line-up existed until 1971, which marks the end of the classic and most successful period of the band. In the period from 1965 until 1969 they had 11 hits in West German pop charts. Their first hit single from 1964 was Shakin' All Over (originally recorded by Johnny Kidd & The Pirates in 1960). Shakin All Over, from 1966, is the second release of the band.

Three Man Army - 1971 - A Third of a Lifetime

Three Man Army was a British hard rock band active in the first half of the 1970s. The group was formed by Adrian Gurvitz and Paul Gurvitz, formerly of The Gun. Following the band's dissolution, Adrian played with Buddy Miles and Paul played with Parrish & Gurvitz, then reunited as Three Man Army. Their debut album, A Third of a Lifetime, featured several drummers, including Miles, Carmine Appice (of Vanilla Fudge) and Mike Kellie (from Spooky Tooth). Tony Newman, who had previously played with Sounds Incorporated and Rod Stewart, joined for the group's next two albums, and a fourth album was planned but never recorded. Newman then left to play with David Bowie, and the Gurvitzes united with Ginger Baker as the Baker Gurvitz Army.

Little Wheel Spin and Spin was the third album by Buffy Sainte-Marie, released in 1966. Although it became her only album to (albeit briefly) reach the Billboard Top 100, it failed to provide any notable standards covered by pop artists. Its most famous song is the epic "My Country 'Tis of Thy People You're Dying", which displayed a native perspective on the colonisation of North America. In contrast to her first two albums which were entirely acoustic with occasional use of her distinctive mouthbow, parts of Little Wheel Spin and Spin added electric guitar by Bruce Langhorne, string arrangements by Felix Pappalardi or feature fellow Native American performer Patrick Sky on guitar with Sainte-Marie. This served to pave the way for Sainte-Marie's stylistic experiments on her remaining Vanguard albums, where she covered territory ranging from country to rock to experimental music.

The GTO's were a "groupie group" that consisted of Miss Pamela (Pamela Ann Miller, later Pamela Des Barres), Miss Sparky (Linda Sue Parker), Miss Lucy (Lucy Offerall, later Lucy McLaren), Miss Christine (Christine Frka), Miss Sandra (Sandra Lynn Rowe, later Sandra Leano), Miss Mercy (Mercy Fontentot, aka Judith Edra Peters) and Miss Cynderella (Cynthia Wells, later Cynthia Cale-Binion). The group hailed from the area around Los Angeles in the late 1960s, with most of the girls being denizens of the Sunset Strip scene. Originally known as "The Laurel Canyon Ballet Company," they changed their name to The GTO's on the advice of Frank Zappa, their financial supporter and producer. The new name is an acronym which, as Stanley Booth wrote, could mean "Girls Together Outrageously or Orally or anything else starting with O." Their only album, Permanent Damage, was released in 1969.

Pete Zorn is an American multi-instrumentalist who has played with some of the biggest names in roots music. He is currently most famous for providing live backing for Richard Thompson and his band, where he switches between acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, mandolin, Tenor, Baritone and Sopranino saxophone, flute, tin whistle and vocals at various points during the set. Although he frequently tours with Thompson, Zorn has also played with many other singers and groups including Arizona Smoke Review formed by older brother Bill Zorn, Show of Hands, the Phil Beer Band, Elaine Paige, Thomas Anders, Barbara Dickson and his band WAZ which currently features folk legend Steve Tilston. He also appeared in the UK Top 10 in 1979 as part of Driver 67 with his brother in law, Paul Phillips on the single, "Car 67". He and Phillips met when Zorn came to London with Fishbaugh, Fishbaugh and Zorn, a three-piece folk rock band signed to CBS Records in London. Because of his talent on so many instruments and a remarkable vocal range, Zorn became a staple of many sessions produced by Phillips in the early and mid-Seventies. After the hit with Car 67, they made an album called Hey Mister Record Man, under the name Tax Loss. Bill and Conrad Zorn also played.

This band, along with Sir Lord Baltimore, Yesterday's Children et al were among the East Coast's premier heavy blasters of the post-psychedelic era. Check out I Just Don't Know and Evolmia from their amazing first album on Atlantic. The second album has longer, less structured cuts with seemingly endless guitar soloing... nevertheless, both are recommended. The first album was produced by Warren Schatz and Stephen Schlaks. Peter Alongi (guitar, vocals), Michael Marine (bass, vocals), Jose Miguel De Jesus (guitar, vocals), Victor Digilie (drums) and Johnny Pacheco (perc).

The Trade Winds was an American pop group formed in Providence, Rhode Island. The group's members were Peter Andreoli (aka Peter Anders) and Vincent Poncia, Jr., and had previously had a hit single together (with a third member, Norman Marzano) under the name The Videls with a song called "Mr. Lonely", which hit #73 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1960. After a few further single releases, The Videls folded, and Anders and Poncia began writing tunes with Phil Spector for groups such as The Ronettes and The Crystals. Recording under the name The Trade Winds in 1965, they released several singles and scored two more U.S. hits, "New York's a Lonely Town" (#32, 1965) and the psychedelic-tinged "Mind Excursion" (#51, 1966). In 1966 they changed their name to The Innocence, recorded a full-length eponymous album, and had two further hit singles, "There's Got to Be a Word!" (U.S. #34, 1966) and "Mairzy Doats" (U.S. #75, 1967). Following the LP release the duo released another album under the name Anders & Poncia on Warner Bros. The name Pickettywitch is often said to have been taken from a Cornish village through which their eventual lead singer, Polly Brown, had passed with her sister; in fact, there is no such village, though there is a pub of that name at Yeovil in Somerset.

Baby was a southern rock band from Texas. The band was signed to Lone Starr Records in the mid 1970s. They got the attention of the executives at Mercury Records based on their regional album sales in Texas. The album was remixed and re-released in mid 1975 on Mercury. Baby had a legion of fans in the Midwest and South in 1975-76 and headlined venues like the famed Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa while generating regional radio airplay on the band's first single, "(It's Another) Saturday Night". The band made just two albums; the self-titled album and the follow-up album called Where Did All The Money Go? released on Chelsea Records in 1976. The second album's title, Where Did All The Money Go?, summed up the feelings for the band that seemed poised for success similar to what other southern rock artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band were having in the mid-70s, but the success never came for them. Johnny Lee Schell: Lead Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Organ, Harmonica & Vocals, John Mark Camp: Rhythm Guitars, Acoustic Guitars & Vocals, Stephen G. Crane: Bass Guitar and Vocals and Woodie Putman: Drums and Percussion

Badger was a British rock band from the early 1970s. By 1974, the band had been reduced to Kaye and Dyke. They recruited bassist, Kim Gardner, who had worked with Dyke in Ashton, Gardner & Dyke. Paul Pilnick, formerly of Stealers Wheel, joined on guitar, as did singer Jackie Lomax. Lomax proceeded to turn them into the type of R&B/soul band he had used on his solo albums. The band became a vehicle for Lomax's songs and singing. During this period, they released one LP, White Lady, on Epic Records, produced by Allen Toussaint. All ten songs were written or co-written by Lomax. Guests on the album included Jeff Beck (contributing a guitar solo to the title track). Before the album's release, the band had split into two factions, with Lomax and Gardner leading a short-lived band called White Lady, before Lomax returned to a solo career. "White Lady" b/w "Don't Pull the Trigger" was released as a single in May 1974.
